Groundhog Day 2016

Groundhog Day 2016 was greeted today, February 2, with Punxsutawney Phil Not Seeing His Shadow – and as NPR reported – the Groundhog Club emcee then proclaimed “There is no shadow to be cast! An early spring is my forecast!”

Today’s blog post includes an envelope cancel from Groundhog Day Station, an article about someone reaching Bill Murray through snail-mail, and someone has figured out just how long Phil was reliving the day in the movie.   (And of course a link to a previous blog post of mine which included the Jeopardy scene from the movie.)

There is a Vanity Fair article from September 2014 about Bill Murray and it tells the story of how Theodore Melfi was able to reach Bill Murray through snail-mail and how it helped him to get to cast Murray in the movie “St. Vincent”:

“In the end, it wasn’t even the many voicemails he left over the course of nearly two months that reached Murray—it was a snail-mail letter that he sent to to a post office recommended by Murray’s lawyer.”

It is a great story worth reading and it concludes with:

“The morals of the story: (1) If you have been trying to get in touch with Murray, always pick up calls from unknown phone numbers. (2) If you are lucky enough to arrange a meeting with Murray, do not get startled if he drives for three hours away from all major cities. And (3), aside from your grandparents, Bill Murray may be the only other person to rely on snail mail.”

Groundhog Day 2016

Today it was fun to come across this YouTube from 2014 where someone actually calculated how long Phil was reliving Groundhog Day in the movie.  See if it is as long as you thought – most fans of the movie I know at some point want to calculate how much time he spent there.

In my blog post from October 26, 2015 When we don’t know the answer it included a YouTube of the Jeopardy scene from Groundhog Day.

I still enjoy this quote from when he gets it right towards the end of the movie:

“When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn’t imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.” – Groundhog Day movie

Wishing you an enjoyable Groundhog Day 2016!  And here’s to enjoying the day again next year, and again….
