“The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” (A Novel)

Happy Sunday! Today’s blog post is about the book I started reading this past Friday  – “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society”.  Have you already read it?  One of the things I already love about this book is the story is told in letters.   The reason I am sharing the book with you now is so you can make arrangements to get a copy so next weekend you can enjoy reading it all tucked inside on a Fall weekend.

The book arrived in the mail on Friday having ordered it earlier in the week on line.    It was suggested by my friend Tally (one of My Three Muses).   I am already almost one-fourth way through reading and have enjoyed reading more of it on this Sunday evening.  From what I have read so far – the book is told within the letters between members of the Society with the main character Juliet Ashton, (and a few telegrams).   The book begins with letters dated January 1946 in England.  I find myself when coming to the next letter turning the pages back to check the date stamp from their last letter between the characters, i.e. has it been a day since they wrote or two weeks?

From the website for the book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows was first published in 2008:

“January 1946: writer Juliet Ashton receives a letter from a stranger, a founding member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. And so begins a remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German occupation, and of a society as extraordinary as its name.”

It appears to have come out in paperback May 05, 2009, and is 304 pages.  Wikipedia shows the book on the New York Times Best Seller List for paperback trade fiction on August 2, 2009 having been on the list for 11 weeks.   It is available as an Ebook, and an Audiobook downloadable (480 minutes).   The website for the book even includes the Potato Peel Pie Recipe.

YouTube – Annie Barrows – “An epistolary novel written by a niece and her aunt, THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY tells the story of an unlikely group of people who came to read and discuss books when their island was taken over by the Nazis during World War II.”

And there is talk of a movie – from April 27, 2013 the Guernsey Press about filming for the film adaptation  ‘Downton Abbey star in talks with Potato Peel film-makers’.   “DOWNTON Abbey star Michelle Dockery could be taking the lead role in the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Hollywood film adaptation.”

In a future blog post I will follow-up after having completed reading the book.  It is already something I am truly enjoying reading and find it hard to put it down.   Join me tomorrow as we kick-off a new week here at AnchoredScraps.com.  (Now I’m off to go read more of my book!)
