Cataloging Skidmore Vintage QSL Card Collection

Today is Part 1 of Cataloging Skidmore Vintage QSL Card Collection Amateur Radio including their postmarks. There are over 90 QSL cards in the two ring album on loan to me. This is truly a special treat sharing today’s post.

We are looking at the QSL Collection for Frank H Skidmore, Sr.

Think of 3.5 x 5 postcard size with Amateur Radio call letters on one side; on the other addressing the recipient including postage stamp and postmark.  The dates are primarily from 1944-1947 with a few exceptions.

If the name Skidmore is ringing any bells, we have been fortunate to cover two books by his son, Frank H. Skidmore, Jr. here at AnchoredScraps previously: Dear Leona by Frank Skidmore 1-22-2017; and  WWI Letters Dear Boys In Service by Frank Skidmore 4-09-2017.

I’ve had the delight of getting to go through the entire Skidmore Vintage QSL Card Collection Amateur Radio for the past several months. It is a wealth of information and discovery. Today’s post is a starting point while Cataloging them with scanning each one and sharing here on this site.

“A QSL card is a written confirmation of either a two-way radio communication between two amateur radio stations or a one-way reception of a signal from an AM radio, FM radio, television or shortwave broadcasting station. It can also confirm the reception of a two-way radio communication by a third party listener.
I have heard that 1947-48 was a good time for amateur radio as there was activity in the stratosphere that improved the transmission of radio waves. With one exception (1934) that is when my father was most active. 1934 he was just starting as a Ham when he was attending the RCA Institute in NYC to get a license to be a radio telegrapher.” – Frank H. Skidmore, Jr.
