Buddy Holly Handwritten Letter

Buddy Holly Handwritten Letter is the title for today’s blog post.

Today, February 3rd, is also referred to in Don McLean’s classic 1971 song American Pie as “the day the music died”.     It was on February 03, 1959 that singers Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa.

Last April the lyrics to the song were auctioned off for $1.2 million.   In Wiki it describes how McLean dedicated the American Pie album to Holly.    Listening to this song I still recall listening to it repeatedly when in Junior High and High School and trying to figure out the lyrics.

Buddy Holly Handwritten LetterIt was neat to come across this Buddy Holly Handwritten Letter.

It is described as “Undated letter on Sullivan Signs letterhead paper handwritten by Holly (1936-1959) in blue ballpoint. It reads: “Due to unforseen T.V. programs in New York we will be unable to play for you on Aug. (1st or 3rd), and hereby cancel our contracts with you. Thanks for your consideration. Regards, Buddy Holly.” In very fine condition with horizontal fold crease, 1.5″ tear near lower right edge, and 1″ tear near upper left edge. With COA from Maria Elena Holly. Sale History: Heritage, April 2006″ as listed at liveauctioneers web site.

The Buddy Holly Story (1978 movie)

Did you ever get around to watching the 1978 movie ‘ The Buddy Holly Story’ with Gary Busey as Buddy; this 1978 review by Roger Ebert reminds me I need to buy the movie to add to my collection.  I still like to catch it when it’s played on TV.   It is interesting to me that the meanings to the movie Groundhog Day (yesterday’s blog post), and today with the song American Pie are still trying to be figured out and how they have resonated to us.  Here’s to remembering and making the time to put pen to paper and share in our letters.
