Over the years at scrapbook events (called “crops”) we have likened the day long/weekend events to Quilting Bees with everyone together while making our respective scrapbook pages. I personally know several of the email subscribers to AnchoredScraps.com love to quilt!
It is a delight to share this book I discovered this week by Laurie Aaron Hird: “The Farmer’s Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt: Inspiring Letters from Farm Women of the Great Depression and 99 Quilt Blocks That Honor Them.”
The book just came out (Paperback) on June 12, 2015 and includes a CD. “Featuring real-life letters from The Farmer’s Wife magazine, Laurie Aaron Hird’s new book commemorates the strength and hope of the farm women of the Great Depression. The 99-block queen-size sampler quilt inspired by these letters uses reproduction 1930s fabrics. For each block, instructions are provided for template piecing, and–where applicable–rotary cutting, so readers can piece the blocks based on their preferred technique.”
On her blog Laurie shares “Because there are many more stories to tell that will never make it into the pages of a book, I am writing this blog.” The images on her blog are fantastic! The blog archives go back to November 2009. It is noteworthy she is the mother to eleven children!

This is her fourth book (third Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt book): The Farmer’s Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt: Inspiring Letters from Farm Women of the Great Depression and 99 Quilt Blocks That Honor Them. (Paperback) June 12, 2015
The Farmer’s Wife, was a women’s monthly magazine. It was first published in 1897 and offered advice about farming, housekeeping and cooking, and included publishing fiction. It ended as an independent publication in 1939, continuing until 1970.
Her first book The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt: Letters from 1920s Farm Wives and the 111 Blocks They Inspired came out in 2009; the next one The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt – A Companion CD for EQ6 came out in 2010, and another book The Farmer’s Wife Pony Club Sampler Quilt: Letters From the Lucky Pony Winners of 1915 and 90 Blocks That Tell… came out in 2011.
How about you? Have you ever quilted? Have you ever been to a Quilting Bee? I appreciate seeing the beautiful work (done by hand) in the photos of this book. Looking online at the preview on Amazon it is inspiring and has prompted me to want to try quilting again! It will probably be on a much smaller project scale though – I must order this book! Once I receive the book I can say to myself “Letters to read before I sleep” while mulling over fabrics and quilt square patterns!
