10 Thousand Red Pears Stamps

There are 10 Thousand Red Pears Stamps in the new 10-cent Definitive Stamps coil of stamps issued on January 17, 2016.

This was the same day as the newPostage Rate Increase.

Back on January 1st my blog post was on the Postal Service Previews 2016 Stamps which includes this stamp.

10 Thousand Red Pears Stamps

This new Red Pears 10-cent definitive stamp features two red pears on a white background. The two most common red pears grown in the United States are the red Anjou, similar to green Anjous in all respects other than color; and red Bartlett pears, referred to as “Summer Pears” for the time of year in which they are harvested.    “Noyes designed this stamp with Burgoyne’s existing illustration of two red pears on a white background.”

In looking around I ended up going to ebay to purchase a few of these stamps otherwise the quantity of 10,000 in a coil is more than I need and would be $1,000.00 once totaled.  I’m hearing talk there is a coil of 500 which I was not able to confirm but it is mentioned on some stamp related sites.      As far as buying a few of them instead of the 10,000 coil, there were several sellers on ebay that promoted a  “after Feb 7” date for shipping and I’ve pre-ordered a few of these stamps just now.  Apparently a seller can break up a coil and sell them individually ie. selling 4 at a time and that way one can still enjoy a few and still keep it budget friendly.

About Definitive Stamps

In looking up more on the topic I like Wikipedia’s info: “A definitive stamp is a postage stamp that is part of the regular issue of a country’s stamps, available for sale by the post office for an extended period of time and designed to serve the everyday postal needs of the country. The term is used in contrast to a “provisional stamp”, one that is issued for a temporary period until regular stamps are available, or a “commemorative stamp”, a stamp “issued to honor a person or mark a special event” available only for a limited time. Commonly, a definitive issue or series includes stamps in a range of denominations sufficient to cover current postal rates…Definitives are the workhorse stamps of a country, and as such, they tend to be small, with designs reflecting local culture and history.”

Additional releases on January 17

Priority Mail La Cueva del IndioBesides the 10-cent Pears stamp there were two other stamps issued on January 17
the Priority Mail Express: Columbia River Gorge $22.95 in a Pane of 10, and
the Priority Mail: La Cueva del Indio $6.45 in a Pane of 10.
Even with digging around the question still begs itself why a roll of 10,000 for the quantity – and will see what my stamp club friend knows about the reason.   I’m going to look into this further and perhaps that is a future blog post topic here.
In closing I wanted to share today a dear friend (who is also a email blog subscriber here) was sharing with me on the phone how her dogs got into a bag of apples and were playing chase with them – which got me to wondering if they would instead consider playing with a bag of pears! Happy Wednesday!
