With the Boston Marathon being held today on Patriots’ Day, we are looking at some Boston Marathon Greeting Cards and the Marathon 1996 USPS Stamp. We’ve got details on the premiere of ‘Boston’, the first feature-length documentary about the history of the legendary Boston Marathon and is narrated by Matt Damon. And we conclude with the Marathon 1996 USPS Stamp. It is worth noting it is also Emancipation Day which is a legal holiday in the District of Columbia, meaning the tax filing deadline for 2017 is pushed to April 18th Tuesday.
On a somber note, today is the 4th anniversary of the deadly Boston Marathon bombing from 2013. From what I read from over the weekend – “Quiet remembrances have been planned Saturday to remember the victims. …On the eve of the anniversary, volunteers have planted thousands of daffodils along the marathon course in solidarity.”
There is an article in the DailyMail – “Boston unveils plans for memorials to the Marathon bombings on anniversary of the attacks” – to be unveiled next year.
Boston Marathon Greeting Cards
We are cheering on the Boston Marathon runners this morning with these Boston Marathon Greeting Cards available at Etsy.
We begin with the card upper left, from Etsy aSteadyPaceStudio – “Boston Marathon 26.2 Handmade Skyline Greeting Card – You Got This – for Boston marathon runners, participants – Congratulations, Good Luck”.
There is the Boston Marathon Route Map Typography Folded Card. “This typography-inspired card highlights not only the route of the world’s oldest annual marathon, but calls out the neighborhoods that host and support thousands of runners and spectators in the name of sport and charity, making the Boston Marathon possible and what it is today.”
To see several cards available at the Etsy Boston Marathon Cards link includes several specifically for the Boston Marathon race.
‘Boston’ first feature-length documentary premiere
This past Saturday was the premiere of “Boston,” the first feature-length documentary about the history of the legendary Boston Marathon race. It is narrated by Matt Damon, and “…chronicles the race from its beginnings in 1897 to the present day, and it features many notable marathoners who have run it.” It includes Bill Rodgers who won in 1975, and 1978-1980, I’ve still got my photo with Bill Rodgers who I met back in 1989 at the Myrtle Beach Classic.
Marathon 1996 USPS Stamp
The 32¢ stamp was issued on February 28, 1996 in Boston. “Inspired by the extraordinary feat of a Greek soldier named Pheidippides, the first marathon was held at the revival of the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, in 1896. According to legend, in 490 B.C., Pheidippides ran from the battlefield at Marathon to Athens, carrying the news of the Athenian victory over Persia. Upon his arrival he shouted the triumphant proclamation, then fell to the ground, dead from exhaustion.”
When I ran and completed the Marine Corps Marathon many years ago the sense of accomplishment to cross the finish line was a very special experience.
As we conclude this morning’s blog post, we cheer for the Boston Marathon runners today. And here’s to pacing ourselves with our individual goals this week and month and year.
Anchors Aweigh,
Helen
