Today, August 4, 2015 has been the First Day of Issue for the U.S. Coast Guard Forever® stamp, First-Class Mail one-ounce. There is also some trivia in today’s blog post about the stamp.
From the U.S. Postal Service site: (On Twitter @USPS) “This stamp honors the United States Coast Guard for its role in protecting the security of the nation and advancing its vital maritime interests. In an oil painting on masonite, renowned aviation artist William S. Phillips depicts two icons of the Coast Guard: the cutter Eagle, a three-masted sailing ship known as “America’s Tall Ship,” and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, the standard rescue aircraft of the Coast Guard.”
The Coast Guard is celebrating its 225th anniversary today! Please note – I did not want us to miss out on the timeliness of this happening today. We will resume with tomorrow’s blog post our theme this week of options for handling our mail when we are on the road.
In the photo on the right from my Twitter stream today, @USPSStamps: “Trivia Time! Can you name the ship featured on the new #CoastGuardStamp?”
This detail about the stamp design may help you answer that trivia! “In an oil painting on masonite, renowned aviation artist William S. Phillips depicts two icons of the Coast Guard: the cutter Eagle, a three-masted sailing ship known as “America’s Tall Ship,” and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, the standard rescue aircraft of the Coast Guard.”
The stamp is being offered for sale in a Pane of 20; Block of 10, Block of 4, Press Sheet with die cuts, Press Sheet without die cuts, Ceremony Program, Digital Color Postmark First Day Cover, Pane of 20 & Digital Color, Postmark First Day Cover, Framed Stamps with First Day of Issue Plaque, and First Day Cover: “Honor our nation’s maritime protector with this new United States Coast Guard First Day Cover. “We do this job because every once in a while someone is out there without hope, desperately praying for their life, and we get to be the answer.” – U.S. Coast Guard
This is definitely a set of stamps that I will be adding (several sets of them) to my collection for my personal correspondence! I hope you will too!
