Mothers Day Themed Planned MovieFest is our blog topic today as I’m sharing some movies that I’m looking at watching this month tied to Mother’s Day Theme.
“We’ll want to include the movie “Beaches” (1988) which begins with the two of them meeting (ages 11), and then writing letters to each other as pen-pals.
Beaches Pen Pals
Over the course of the movie we will see them first kicking off being pen pals and seeing those letters woven among their growing up, and later seeing them as roommates, and their respective lives and career choices, and enduring close friendship.
In this scene towards the end of the movie it includes Bette Midler reading some of the cherished stacks of those letters she had sent to Barbara Hershey over the years tied with ribbons.

Other movies that I’ve been thinking to include in my Mothers Day Themed Planned MovieFest are: “Moonstruck” (1987); “Terms of Endearment” (1983); Les Misérables in Concert (1995) – it was the 10th Anniversary Dream Cast – especially watch Ruthie Henshall as Fantine; and dust off “Stella Dallas” (1937) with Barbara Stanwyck.
You really want to see the entire “Stella Dallas” movie, unfortunately this YouTube scene stops right before the very end which you want to watch Barbara Stanwyck close out the final scene of the movie. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for this movie, and Anne Shirley for Best Supporting Actress.
Don’t forget the movie I showcased last year on my Mother’s Day blog post with “I Remember Mama” (1948) with Irene Dunne. Happy Saturday!

Helen
