Commemorative 1966 Circus Stamp is perfect given it is Saturday and the movie The Greatest Show on Earth (about circus life) took home an Oscar on this day for Best Picture on March 19, 1953.
Commemorative 1966 Circus Stamp
Today’s blog post is short & sweet! It is great fun to find this 5 cent Commemorative 1966 Circus Stamp issued on May 2, 1966 “to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of John Ringling and to honor the American Circus industry.”
The Greatest Show on Earth
It was interesting to learn that this was the only Academy Award that filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille won during his career. The movie is set in the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The film starred Charlton Heston, Betty Hutton, Dorothy Lamour, and Cornel Wilde. Wikipedia mentions James Stewart had a supporting role “as a mysterious clown who never removes his make-up, even between shows”. To read that this movie beat out that same year for Best Picture – High Noon, Ivanhoe, The Quiet Man (mentioned in my first blog post here almost 400 daily blog posts ago), and Singin’ in the Rain was surprising. It goes onto say that DeMille’s next film he went onto produce and direct was The Ten Commandments.
I’ve included this movie Trailer of the film The Greatest Show on Earth (1952) and it includes Cecil B. DeMille’s opening remarks. And if you go to the four minute mark it includes showing Jimmy Stewart in costume.
The weather today turned out surprisingly nice and for those of us who were expecting rain here’s hoping you were able to get out and enjoy being outside! Thank you for joining me today for Commemorative 1966 Circus Stamp. Tomorrow takes us into Palm Sunday.
