This morning we are combining John Hancock’s birthday with celebrating cursive writing for the 41st National Handwriting Day 2018. Furthermore, this is ‘”International Handwriting Week” from Jan 21-27, 2018.’
This is my third year to write a post on it; here are links to my previous 2017 and 2016 posts on National Handwriting Day. I’m including them because they still contain helpful background information and relevant suggestions on ideas for celebrating.
National Handwriting Day 2018
There are three items focusing on in today’s post.
To begin with, those with school-age children, you will want to check out the Campaign for Cursive. There are three separate 2018 Cursive is Cool Handwriting Contests for grades 1-6; two in Canada (English, and French), and the U.S. “The Cursive is Cool (r) Contest is open between Jan 23rd and March 4th, 2018. All entries must be postmarked on or before the March 4th date.”
In addition, over at Stationery Matters, “US celebrates 41st National Handwriting Day” their article from yesterday includes these ideas of what to write about today: “Craft a note. Draft a letter. Transcribe your thoughts. Practice your signature.”
Lastly, their article concludes with linking over to pencilsandpens.org.“WIMA sponsors National Handwriting Day every January 23 in conjunction with John Hancock’s birthday. Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence and is famous for his large, bold signature.”
Furthermore, WIMA is the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association (WIMA). “Established in 1977, on the birthday of America’s most notable scribe, John Hancock, National Handwriting Day designates a day each year to acknowledge the history and importance of penmanship.”
You can read all about their endorsement of a bi-partisan Congressional Recognition this year for the day.
In conclusion, I’m hoping today we all can find a few minutes to put pen to paper with letter writing, perhaps at lunchtime. Enjoy!
