“Auld Lang Syne” is synonymous with New Year’s Eve. There have been so many things competing for inclusion in today’s final blog post (#309) for 2015 on this New Year’s Eve – two have won out: “Auld Lang Syne” & Tribbles!
Before we get started please join me in raising a toast to Melanie, a penpal friend of mine, who has successfully met her goal of writing 365 letters in 2015! Imagine!
This will be featured in a future blog post but I wanted to say Congratulations to her today prior to closing out 2015. We began corresponding this year and she is an AnchoredScraps.com email blog subscriber too.
“Auld Lang Syne” was written in 1788 by the poet Robert Burns.
Online I have been able to locate websites with “The Letters of Robert Burns” which will be a future blog post topic – look for that too in 2016.
Over the years the tradition has been for us to watch the New Year’s Eve countdown on television with Dick Clark and have seen it transitioned to Ryan Seacrest. Along the way there have been related themes of the song including Barry Manilow “It’s Just Another New Year’s Eve” written in 1977, “Same Old Lang Syne” by Dan Fogelberg – released as a single in 1980, and for “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve” includes Karen Carpenter singing it – released in 1984, still love the 1969 Johnny Mathis version, and we can fast forward to 2014 with Idina Menzel singing it in her Holiday Wishes album.
It was interesting to read “One of the most interesting facts is that the Auld Lang Syne tune which is sung from Times Square to Tokyo, and has conquered the world, is not the one Robert Burns put the original words to. The older tune though is still sung by traditional singers.” There are numerous verses and can be found here.
Now about those tribbles….
In the 44th episode of Star Trek, from 1967, the episode “The Trouble with Tribbles” is still a favorite to re-watch. In 1967 we had a color tv – truly! – and I still recall watching that episode when it first aired. What has this episode got to do with this blog about letter writing? Well, its been shared with me by some of my closest family & friends that keeping up with READING my daily blog posts here is relentless! Some have opted to queue them up and will read a week of the blog posts at a time, some have shared with me they at least open the email subscribe each day in their email inbox and read the first few sentences and determine to read now or to wait. When I’m told this I smile to myself, thinking and you are just keeping up with reading them – let alone being the person who writes them and I really do understand!
Tonight at midnight we will ring in the new year and tomorrow we will kick off 2016 here continuing to blog daily. I’m excited about the future and continuing this daily blog journey here. Next year will include topics as varied as “84, Charing Cross Road” Helene Hanff, “The Woman in White” – Wilkie Collins, and a favorite story my Dad told – The Story of PDOMA & PDOYA. I know I said this yesterday but it bears repeating: “One of the things from having written over 300 consecutive daily blog posts this year has been the realization that the 24 hours in each day do go by whether we have accomplished anything or not – and with that the importance of not just thinking about doing something but to actually take action.”
Here’s a toast to a successful year ahead making the most of those 366 days of 24 hour blocks of precious time.
Happy New Year!
Helen
